Improved BEC SMOS Arctic Sea Surface Salinity product v3.1

چکیده

Abstract. Measuring salinity from space is challenging since the sensitivity of brightness temperature (TB) to sea surface (SSS) low (about 0.5 K psu?1), while SSS range in open ocean narrow 5 psu, if river discharge areas are not considered). This translates into a high accuracy requirement radiometer 2–3 K). Moreover, TB at cold waters even lower (0.3 making retrieval more challenging. Due this limitation, ESA launched specific initiative 2019, Arctic+Salinity project (AO/1-9158/18/I-BG), produce an enhanced Arctic product with better quality and resolution than available products. paper presents methodologies used new SMOS (Martínez et al., 2019) . SMOS: Measuring Sea Surface Salinity from Space

In May 1999, the European Space Agency (ESA) selected SMOS as an Earth Explorer Opportunity mission. One of its goals is the generation of global Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) maps. The sensor embarked is an L-band interferometric radiometer with full-polarimetric capability called MIRAS. The retrieval of SSS from microwave measurements is based on the fact that the brightness temperature (TB) of ...

Sea Surface Salinity Retrieval within the ESA Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Mission

The SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) mission will provide from 2007 onwards global maps of soil moisture over land and sea surface salinity over ocean. The radiometry group of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in Barcelona has been involved either in the definition of the SMOS single payload, MIRAS (Microwave Imaging Radiometer by Aperture Synthesis), or in the organization of ...

Arctic sea ice concentration observed with SMOS during summer

The launch of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission, in 2009, marked the dawn of a new type of space-based microwave observations. Although the mission was originally conceived for hydrological and oceanographic studies [3,4], SMOS is also making inroads in the cryospheric sciences by measuring the thin ice thickness [5,6]. SMOS carries an L-band (1.4 GHz), passive interferometric...

Assessment of the Local Oscillator calibration frequency impact on the SMOS Sea Surface Salinity

The MIRAS instrument has a unique reference clock that is distributed to the Control and Monitoring units (CMN) located in the SMOS arms and in the hub. Each CMN uses the clock signal, provided by the Local Oscillator, to generate a reference tone and provide it to a group of six receivers. Although every CMN should generate exactly the same tone, the phase of the tones drifts due to the temper...
